Professional Statement

Health is one of the most important things in this world, because as my favorite quote says, “the greatest wealth is health”. Health education and the medical field have always greatly appealed to me, due to the fact that I am a very health conscious person. As a Mexican American woman, I grew up in a culture where taking care of your body is not emphasized. Many Mexican mothers say that if their child isn’t fat, they aren’t well fed. This is just a small sample of many things that motivate me to educate the public about health and help people take better care of their bodies.

After graduating in the spring of 2020 and obtaining my bachelor’s degree, I hope to pursue nursing school. I plan to spend about the next four years obtaining my licensure, and the year after that finding a solid job that involves both taking care of patients as a nurse, as well as educating the community. I am a strong believer in prevention rather than focusing on treatment, and health education is key for this. My degree in Community Health Education will have prepared me for this by knowing effective ways of educating people, as well as the tools that are necessary to reach my goals. My minor in Gerontology will have prepared me for a population that is often avoided and will help me be culturally competent when it comes to dealing with older adults. Gerontology is related to people of all ages, since we all age, and this can prepare me to teach others how to be aging ready as well.
