Competencies Samples of Work:

Sample Research Project: An essay evaluating the website SAMHSA.gov based on the available resources for people who need help with substance abuse. SAMHSA focuses on the treatment and prevention of both substance abuse and mental health by providing helplines, data, programs, and more. Access to this website can properly educate someone on substance abuse prevention and treatment, and offers hotlines for those who need immediate help.

Sample Powerpoint: A powerpoint presentation summarizing a curriculum created to reduce the obesity rate among males and females ages 18-45 in the Hispanic/Latino community in Long Beach. Six units were created, with specific instructional objectives, which are then implemented through different learning opportunity activities.

Written Paper Sample: A epidemiological description of HIV and its impact on the Hispanic/Latino community, used to advocate for change in order to decrease the rates. The paper describes and analyzes the extent of the problem, agent of disease, modes of transmission, environmental and socioeconomic factors, the current hypothesis for how to reduce the impact of this health disparity, and more.

Reflection: The samples of work above are only a few of the many that were completed throughout my college career. Due to the different focuses of each class, all aspects of the 7 competencies were covered. Each and every single one of my classes touched on a minimum of 1 competency, and not only taught us each area, but allowed us to apply that knowledge through our work. Reflecting on my understanding on the competencies when I first began my degree to now, I have immensely expanded my knowledge and skills. My sample work are evidence of my accomplishments and growing understanding. My goals are to continue learning and reinforcing the information I learn, by proving my retention through my work.

Cultural Competency Sample of Work

Written Paper Sample: An excerpt of a research grant proposal to advocate for a need to reduce the rates of obesity within young adult Hispanics/Latinos in Long Beach, California. The paper highlights the description of obesity and its impact on the Hispanic/Latino community, as well as a review of research, the topic's theoretical relevance, the hypotheses, formative evaluation methods, and more. The priority population is analyzed in order to utilize effective ways of teaching them based on their culture, existing beliefs, and existing resources.

Reflection: The sample of work above includes an in depth analyzation of research regarding the priority population's culture and beliefs, in order to cater the program and activities to them. Different groups of people have different opinions, beliefs, religions, resources, etc. that influence their personalities and habits. One must understand these differences and get to know your population in order to be culturally competent; this is very important in health education, because in order to implement change, you must be someone the community can trust. This paper showed me how much research and the understanding of people's cultures is necessary in order to meet the needs of different groups. I hope to continue to train myself to be culturally competent in my future career, with whichever types of groups I come across.
